The Past

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Monochrome Monday - 23rd March

This is the Quoits team down in Suffolk 1933 - pictured here is the grandfather of my wife -Herbert Taylor.

The photo is scanned from an old newspaper cutting by the look of it.

They looked pretty pleased - I assume they have won the league or a competition.

Quoits is a game in which rings are thrown at a peg. I have not heard of it being played in the area in which I live - I do not know if it is popular in other parts of the country.

I haven't been to your blog in awhile but every time I see an old photo of my family I wish I had a scanner so I could use some of them for sepia or mono days. So I always think of you and how you do so well by your family. This one is wonderful too.

A great piece of family history, and an insight into the recreational habits of a long lost time. I used to play quoits when I was a child, but I hadn't realised that it used to be an adult sport of such seriousness!

A game that is played in three-pieces suit, tie, and elegant hats ! They looked serious, but at this time, every body did on pictures. Maybe, it wasn't a game to enjoy oneself, just a game to be proud of winning.
I like it a lot.
