There were some surprises in the Carling Cup last night as some big names said goodbye to the competition.
Still remaining is Manchester United with a convincing win over Scunthorpe 5-2 including 2 goals from Michael Owen. Now is he likely to bounce back into form and earn himself a regular place in the main side ?
Roberto Mancini kept his main players in reserve ready for the weekend match with Chelsea which meant that Manchester City went down to West Bromwich Albion 2-1 - this was after a lead early on in the game from a goal by Jo.
Chelsea are also out after a 4-3 defeat by Newcastle and Liverpool were humiliated by lowly Northampton Town , 2-2 the result and then exit via the penalty shootout 4-2.
No doubt the big clubs will have their excuses......
Well Friday saw England in action against Bulgaria in the European Championship qualifying round and winning 4-0 with goals from Defoe (3) and Johnson.
A really good result especially after the poor showing in the World Cup in South Africa but the bad news on the night was that Tottenham defender Michael Dawson is expected to be out of the game for 2 months after receiving a serious injury to his knee after an hour into the game.
Switzerland away is the next game on Tuesday which is likely to be far harder.
