The Past

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Monochrome Monday - 19th January

Uncle Jim

A fine looking fellow with his moustache and bow tie - perhaps a little fierce looking ??

This is my mothers uncle - James Francis who was born around 1877 in Ardwick Manchester. The family originally came from north Wales and they often went back there on visits hence the photograph being taken in Denbigh.

I would imagine that this photo was taken between 1900 - 1910.

Hi Aileni

Yes lots of people with the surname Francis - mine originated in Cornwall ( tin miners ) then moved to Wales as the mines in Cornwall closed.

He does look intense but I think back then the photographer's subject had to stand or sit very still for quite a long while to get a good photo.

I don't think he looks fierce, I think he looks quite dashing.

That's a wonderful photograph to have. I love having some old photographs of family members from that time period too.

I believe he is a fine looking fella. His eyes may be a little grim, but that could be because he is tired of posing. I do enjoy old photographs, even if I don't know the people.

Amazingly sharp image for a tintype (I assume that's what it is anyway).

Actually your Uncle Jim looks a lot like a fellow I work with, but his lineage is Scottish.

I love older photos and have several of my grandparents and other relatives. There is something so rich about them that photos can't capture these days. Thanks for sharing.

He actually looks VERY much like my hubby.....who has dark hair (quite a bit less that this gentleman) and a handlebar moustache. I think he is quite handsome!

Okay, James Francis was my first husband's name. No resemblance. Well, maybe the nose. :D This is a lovely monochrome choice.

Very handsome fellow! I'm always fascinated at how picture taking was such a serious thing back in those days.

That's a pretty old photo. Aren't old family photos amazing?

Good shape for something from the early 1900's. I always enjoy looking at them.

Old photos are the best they are full of character.

Yes, I think he looks fierce, as you wrote, but every portrait at that time got that grave expression. No smile at this time.
Your picture makes a wonderful entry for Monochrome Monday, Petrus.
