ABC Wednesday - D for Dolmen

A Dolmen is a megalithic tomb found in Ireland that dates back to around 2000 BC.

This is the Poulnabrone Dolmen found on the Burren in the west of Ireland not far from Galway City.

The word Burren derives from boireann which means " rocky land " in Gaelic. It is basically a wild barren limestone plateau in northwest County Clare.

Wow! I've never heard of those before. It reminds me a bit of our natives' inukshuk, which Vancouver has adopted as our logo for the 2010 Olympics. Naturally, most of us had never heard of those, either, before then. Interesting post. :D

These megalithic dolmens are impressive. Two years ago I visited Newgrange. I really got the impression of ages looking down on me.

Good choice.
I think I get tunnel vision when seeking subjects then everyone reminds me of things I could use.

It saddens me that a great many of these tombs were lost for ever in the last few centuries for the use of the stone... but this one is a cracker for sure.. and you captured the beauty of it so well.

Well we learn so much every day, except on a Wednesday when we learn so much more. Great post. Although we have been to Ireland we've never seen this....something to look out for when we go again.

I went to this place. My daughter and I looked all over the burren for it....driving down the wrong roads. Finally got there and the odometer of the rental car said 444.4 miles.
