ABC Wednesday - B for Budapest

Just back from two weeks in Spain and have missed my Blogging - there's two B's !!

This picture is taken in Budapest Hungary and shows the memorial to those killed in the 1956 Hungarian Rising whilst fighting against the communist regime and the Soviet invasion forces.

I remember this time well - hearing the radio news and seeing the pictures in the local newspaper - I was about 8 or 9 years old and did not really understand  what was happening  ..

Glad to be be back to ABC Wednesday ....... !!

Mevagissey - The town and port

I think from what I've read on my ABC Wednesday Y entry there are a lot of Bloggers out there who originate from Cornwall or intend to visit in the future.

So here are a few more pictures -

If you go to Cornwall do not forget to have a Cornish Cream Tea - this consists of a pot of tea plus large warm scones - butter , thick clotted cream and strawberry jam  - plus 1000's of calories !!

There are many narrow streets like these - OK for smugglers in days of old but not if you have a 4 x 4.

Lighting the way into the harbour - lots of anglers ..

Crane available should you need to take your boat out of the harbour ..

Lots of little houses rising above the harbour ..

Swans on the move .. wonder if they are residents ? or are they summer visitors from the Steppes of Russia ?

Mevagissey - The coast

Cornwall has a wild coast - famous for shipwrecks and smugglers - here are a few pictures taken near Mevagissey.

This was actually quite a good day weather wise but the sea still looks rough.

ABC Wednesday - Y for yacht.

Y is for yacht - here at Mevagissey in Cornwall

A tourist honey spot - you'll find lots of winding lanes and cobbled streets - bars, cafes and all the associated tourist paraphernalia. Lots of yachts, sailing boats and fishing vessels in the harbour.

Once a thriving fishing village Mevagissey has suffered like other ports with the decline of the fishing industry.

Since my visit to Cornwall I have discovered that my ancestors came from Truro and were tin miners  ( that other famous Cornish occupation )

Christmas Day Wedding

This wedding took place on Christmas Day 1918 at Farnham, Suffolk between Herbert Taylor and Ellen Carter.

They all look a little bit serious - the Great War had only just ended and I would guess that there was going to be a great social upheaval so perhaps the future was a bit uncertain for them.

The Old Boiler House ..

The Old Boiler House at the ICI site  ( then to become Zeneca then to become Avecia  ) at Blackley,  Manchester.

Unusual in that it was coal fired ..

Pulled down - this part of the site is now a housing development .

The chemical works and laboratories have now long gone - all that remains is Hexagon Tower with a few offices and work shops.

Much of Britain's original manufacturing base has now disappeared and we seem to import everything from India or China ..
