Stretford - St . Matthew

The church of St. Matthew can be found on the Chester Road in Stretford. There has been a church on the site since at least 1592 (the date of the earliest parish register)

The present building was completed in 1842 and extended in 1861 to seat 1,070 people.

Stretford - Civic Hall / Town Hall

This rather ornate building was called the Civic Hall when I lived in Stretford and I understand it is now called Stretford Public Hall - I guess the local politicians thought the world civic too upmarket.

It was called the Town Hall but was never actually used for that. Built in 1878 by John Rylands it was bought after his death by the Council for £5000 and used for educational purposes.

Stretford - Bridgewater Canal

The Bridgewater Canal at Stretford - the whole scene looks desolate - a lick of paint and more needed on these boats.

Stretford - Stretford Mall

When I lived in Stretford many many years ago the Stretford Mall was known as the Arndale Centre.

Built about fifty years ago it enveloped the main shopping centre and all the little shops and adjoining roads disappeared. Leaving the centre to my mind without any character.
