This is the Quoits team down in Suffolk 1933 - pictured here is the grandfather of my wife -Herbert Taylor.
The photo is scanned from an old newspaper cutting by the look of it.
They looked pretty pleased - I assume they have won the league or a competition.Quoits is a game in which rings are thrown at a peg. I have not heard of it being played in the area in which I live - I do not know if it is popular in other parts of the country.

I haven't been to your blog in awhile but every time I see an old photo of my family I wish I had a scanner so I could use some of them for sepia or mono days. So I always think of you and how you do so well by your family. This one is wonderful too.

ReplyDeleteA great piece of family history, and an insight into the recreational habits of a long lost time. I used to play quoits when I was a child, but I hadn't realised that it used to be an adult sport of such seriousness!
ReplyDeleteA game that is played in three-pieces suit, tie, and elegant hats ! They looked serious, but at this time, every body did on pictures. Maybe, it wasn't a game to enjoy oneself, just a game to be proud of winning.
